The National Honor Society is one of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized cocurricular student organizations in American high schools.
More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in extracurriculuar activities and community service.
Step 1: Invitation
At the end of each semester, the NHS adviser will collect a list of academically eligible sophomores, juniors, and seniors from subject teachers. Eligible students will be notified of their candidacy via email and invited to submit a membership application.
Step 2: Candidate Form
This candidate application must detail extracurricular and co-curricular activities, leadership roles, service involvement, community activities, work experience, any awards or recognition, and essays.
Step 3: Faculty Review
Once the candidate application is submitted, students who pass the document review will be evaluated by all secondary faculty, who will vote based on guidelines aligned with the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Following this, the Faculty Council will make the final determination regarding each candidate's eligibility.
Step 4: Selection / Non-Selection
Additional information may be requested from faculty or administration as needed. Students will be notified, in writing, of their selection or non-selection. Membership in NHS is competitive, and only those who meet the highest standards in all areas will be considered. Members must continue to uphold these standards to maintain their membership throughout their high school career.
